Byron Bay – what to do and where to eat

Welcome to Byron Bay

Byron Bay is a coastal town located 165km south of Brisbane. It’s well-known for its beautiful beaches and great surf, but most of all for its very relaxed vibe. Around every corner you’ll find a new healthy-food heaven and it doesn’t take long until you’ll be walking around Byron barefoot yourself.

From Brisbane you can catch a bus from the city (return AUD $76) that will take you to Byron Bay in two hours. You can also reach Byron by plane, by flying to neigboring town Ballina.

Main Beach

Byron is home to many beaches, with Main beach (aptly named) being the most well-known and central beach of ’em all. During the day main beach is a great place to relax and go for a swim, but my favorite time to be here is at the end of the day.

When the sun starts to set, Byron’s best artists bring their guitar and come out to play. A sunset, a cold beer (make sure you hide it when the police patrols though) and live music – does life get any better?

Cape Byron

An absolute must-visit when going to Byron Bay, are Cape Byron and the Byron Bay Lighthouse. Cape Byron is located at the most easterly point of the Australian mainland, making it the first place in Australia where you see the sun come up.

Speaking of which: make sure you watch the sunrise here at least once, as it’s a truly magical experience.

After sunrise you can walk back towards Byron’s main beach via the Cape Byron Walking track. This track will take you along stun-ning beaches such as Wategos Beach and The Pass.

I’m not much of a hiker but I would definitely recommend doing this track. It’s simply gorgeous.

Food? You’ve got my full attention.

As mentioned before, Byron Bay is food heaven. Acai bowls around every corner and vegan options a plenty. Here are some of my favorites.

The Farm
Breakfast & lunch – Located about 7km from Byron Bay, The Farm is a fun place to visit for breakfast or lunch. The food is absolutely delicious, and if you’re traveling with kids this a great place to go.

The farm organizes walking tours, workshops and educates people on the way good is grown and produced.

I’d make a good farmer wouldn’t I? 😉

Folk Byron Bay
Breakfast & lunch – Every Instagrammer’s dream, and every foodie’s heaven: that’s Folk. All food is organic & ethical, and most of all very delicious. Get a cold-pressed coffee or try one of their famous bowls. Thank me later 😉

Balcony Bar & Oyster Co
Brunch, Dinner, Drinks – I’m a vegetarian, and I also don’t eat seafood. But nevertheless Balcony Bar is worth a visit. We’ve had a couple of drinks here and really enjoyed the atmosphere, as the place is beautifully decorated.

Loft Byron Bay
All day food – we visited Loft for a glass of wine and a delicious cheese platter, while looking out over one of Byron’s main streets. In the distance we could see the sun setting.

Whilst a few days in Byron Bay is enough to explore the town and its surroundings, this is a place you can easily stay for weeks or even months. I visited Byron a total of three times now, and I hope many more visits will follow 🙂
