What to do in Sydney in Winter, you ask? Sydney is known as a sunny summer destination. So without being able to enjoy the countless warm weather activities this gorgeous city has to offer, you might wonder what else there is to do. Well, good news: the answer is PLENTY! In this article I’ll list some of the most fun winter activities for you.
Please note: due to the current pandemic some of the below activities may not be available in 2020.
Vivid Light Festival
Every year around the end of May Sydney lights up in beautiful colors and stunning displays. Vivid Light Festival was first organized 10 years ago and intented to bring some light into the dark start of winter.
Vivid now draws hundreds of thousands of tourists to Sydney every year to admire the miraculous light installations. Walk through the Botanical Gardens, past the Opera House all the way to The Rocks to admire these beautiful works of art. Don’t forget to grab a hot drink or a winter snack at one of the many food stalls to stay warm. Tip: they often sell “poffertjes” (Dutch mini pancakes) at Vivid. Yummm!
Bondi Winter Magic
Ever been ice skating at the beach? Well, now you can, at Bondi Winter Magic. This fun festival starts in July, but due to Covid-19 the 2020 edition will take place in October.
Next to going for an ice skate you can hop on the ferris wheel to see Bondi from a new perspective. “Ohhhs” and “ahhhs” guaranteed!
The beautiful Coastal walks
Summer, winter, autumn or spring – going on a Sydney coastal walk is always a good idea!
Make sure you’re layered up, as winter in Sydney ranges around the 15 degree mark. You’ll soon be sweating buckets though, as most coastal walks lead you up and down beautiful paths.
Some great walks to check out:
– Bondi to Coogee Walk (my fave!)
– Hermitage Foreshore Track
– Manly to Spit walk
– Watsons Bay walk
Sydney Tower Eye
Rising 250 meters above the city, Sydney Tower Eye offers you far-stretched views that’ll keep you entertained for hours. If you want more, book a table at the Sydney Tower restaurant. This spot is always slowly rotating so you get spectacular views over the entire city.
Whale Watching
I remember the first time I saw a whale. I booked a whale watching tour from Darling Harbour. While on the boat I got very, very seasick (even though I took tablets) but the moment the captain yelled out “WHALE!!” my sickness was gone and I was just simply mesmerized. Such a spiritual experience!
If you don’t want to go whale watching on a boat with a tour company, there are plenty of amazing spots throughout Sydney where you are able to spot whales. Take the Bondi Golf course for example, or sit down next to Hornby Lighthouse in Watsons Bay. But also if you’re on the Bondi to Coogee walk remember to keep an eye on the ocean constantly, as chances are fairly high you’ll suddenly spot one 🙂
Whale season runs from May till November.
Luna Park
No matter your age, Luna Park Sydney is so much fun! Go for a hilarious ride on the rollercoaster, or glide down one of their slides. I went with a group of friends (all aged 20-30) and we laughed our butts off.
If it’s a sunny winter day, perhaps you’d also like to go for a swim in the North Sydney Olympic Pool, one of Sydney’s most beautiful pools.
I hope giving you these options will have answered your question on What to do in Sydney in Winter 🙂 Have fun!
