You might have heard of Unyoked: they’re those guys that built tiny little houses and dropped them in secluded places all over NSW, Victoria and one close to Brisbane. Unyoked offers “an ancient remedy for modern times“, aka a place to unwind, relax and shake off all the city stress.
I had the pleasure of staying at one of Unyoked’s cabins near Jamberoo, NSW, on a 2 hour drive south from Sydney. I’ve been in Australia for four years now, and I can honestly say this experience made it to my top 5 of epic Australia adventures. And here’s why….
A dark arrival…
We arrived around 8pm, which in winter means the sun is already long gone. There were a couple of torches waiting for us at the parking area, as well as a couple of wheelie bins to get our stuff to our cabins.
We followed the arrows that Unyoked set out for us all throughout the forest, and after a 10-20 minute walk we arrived at our cabin.
We have arrived!
The cabin, named Sadie, looked so cozy, and was a lot more spacious than I had thought! Unyoked literally thought of every single detail: from a retro cassette player to hot chocolate with marshmallows, to hot water bottles to keep us warm at night. We prepared some dinner, shared a few beers and wines and got ready for the night.
A special kinda sunrise
Unyoked cabins don’t have any curtains or blinds in front of the windows, so you wake up with the natural light. Around 6:15am orange colours started to develop in the sky, and soon I was able to see the insane location of my cabin. Right at the edge of the forest, with million dollar views.
May your coffee be strong…
Unyoked literally thought of everything. You need to bring your own groceries, but they take care of the stuff that really matters: coffee. Fresh beans, a grinder and a stovetop coffee maker are provided to start your day right. We whipped up some pancakes, sat down outside on the porch (picnic blanket also provided) and enjoyed this outdoor breakky to the fullest.
Did someone say sustainable?
Ohhh yes, you heard that right! This stay couldn’t be more eco-friendly, as the cabin is 100% solar powered. Everything is made out of plywood, and ingeniously crafted to make optimal use of space.
Getting a koality sleep!
All Unyoked cabins are equipped with a Koala mattress and pillows, so you not only get to unwind, but also get the best. possible. sleep. ever. Koala & Unyoked even include a sleep tape (to use with the cool retro cassette player), to help you doze off in no time. Everything for a truly relaxing experience, which we all need right now!
As we all know, our grey furry friends haven’t had it easy in the past few decades. The population of this Aussie icon is declining rapidly due to poaching and habitat loss (think bushfires). Koala have partnered with the WWF to make a symbolic adoption to protect koalas with every mattress purchased.

Fire it uuuup!
Unyoked cabins come with a little fire pit, and they also provide firewood. But before you light it up, please check the fire ratings in the area. There was no fire danger when we visited, so prepared ourselves a lovely little campfire and roasted some marshmallows for s’mores. YUM!
Totally zen-tastic!
After two nights it was time to say goodbye to our little cabins and head back to the big smoke. I can safely say we truly unwound, relaxed and got rid off our fast-paced habits that the city brings upon us. Waking up with those views, spending the entire day in nature and ending the day with a campfire just takes you back to basic, and puts all of our city-troubles in great perspective.
