Last Wednesday I arrived in Sydney -quite the change compared to the small and lovely Ho
bart! The sky was falling down that night, and I barely made it to the supermarket. Sometimes you forget that Australia is actually just one big tropical island, and that these tropical showers are part of the experience.

The next day the skies cleared up and I went for two job interviews at two hostels. Both of them were disappointing because it was only working for accommodation, and right now I’m just looking for making some serious cash to spend in this expensive country. I soon forgot about the shitty interviews and focused on the here and now: I’m in Sydney baby! Together with my best friend Google Maps I walked towards Sydney’s most famous sights: the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. It was a lovely walk because it takes you through Sydney’s botanical gardens. After 30 minutes of strolling there she was; the Opera House! And right behind her shining just as bright was the Harbour bridge. After shooting some close ups I walked to Mrs Macquerie’s Chair where you get a lovely view on both the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. I sat down on one of the rocks to take in this awesome view, until a gazillion buses with Chinese tourists arrived. Like a plague they took over the place, shooting photos with their big iPads and posing with peace signs. It was a funny, oh so typical thing to witness.
That night it was time to celebrate St. Patrick’s day so the girls in my dorm and I went out for a few beers! Unfortunately the only Irish pub in our area was overcrowded, so we had to go somewhere else. Eventually it was a good night 🙂
Bondi Beach Baby!
Because the hostel was fully booked for the weekend I decided to spend two days on Sydney’s most famous beach: Bondi! Friday morning I jumped on the bus and within 20 minutes the skyscrapers made room for surf shops and coffee bars: I was in Bondi! I checked in at the hostel I booked (Surfside Backpackers, worst hostel ever, never go there!), dumped my backpack and went to the beach! Unfortunately my peaceful beachvibe was quickly killed by some dark clouds. The rain started pouring down and didn’t stop until the end of the day. When the rain was finally over I hurried back to the beach for the most gorgeous sunset I have ever witnessed. The sky turned red, purple, orange and pink and gave me the opportunity to shoot some amazing pictures.
The next day was a beautiful day! I spent most of the day chilling on the beach until a friendly Englishman put down his towel next to me and started a conversation. I ended up in a bar drinking beers with him and his friends – a perfect ending to a wonderful day!
Going home to the city
On Sunday I got to check out at the hostel from hell, and went back ‘home’ to the hostel I stayed in before the weekend. This hostel is called Nate’s Place, is located in Kings Cross and the staff are extremely friendly. The beds are comfy, there are plenty of showers and toilets, so if you ever find yourself in Sydney then definitely stay here 🙂 (no, I don’t get paid to say this, haha)
Bondi to Coogee
One of the most famous walks in Sydney is the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. It was supposed to be a rainy rainy Tuesday today, but when I woke up the sky was clear and the sun came out, so I hopped in the shower excited to go on this coastal walk! I took the bus to Bondi and the walking commenced. This walk takes you to four beaches and you walk past the most stunning, gorgeous, beautiful coastal cliffs. Halfway I stopped for a cup of coffee while I enjoyed the view. Once in Coogee I bought a sandwich and devoured it at the beach. Unfortunately a few minutes later it started raining, so right now I’m enjoying a warm cup of tea in a nice Coogee cafe 🙂 The skies will clear up soon so I can enjoy a few more hours of sunshine at the beach, yay!
Tomorrow I’m going to the Blue Mountains with a bunch of Dutchies, and on Thursday I’m having dinner with a friend from Amsterdam who moved to Sydney a few years ago together with her boyfriend. Never a dull moment whilst traveling! 🙂
