Domburg is a small beach town located in the south of The Netherlands, in the province Zeeland. You might not have heard of Zeeland, but you probably have heard of New Zealand which actually thanks its name to this Dutch province. Ever since I was a little girl I anually paid a visit to this lovely beach getaway. You can imagine I was more than excited to go back this year!
Unique to the area: poles on the beach
Domburg has beautiful, big and endless beaches which are, just like the other beaches in the area Walcheren, clearly distinguishable from other (Dutch) beaches by the poles on the beach. The function of these poles is to make sure the current doesn’t get too strong, otherwise the beach would slowly disappear and eventually the dunes would be eaten up by the ocean as well. And for Travel Bloggers like me they are act like pretty photogenic props 😉
Best beaches of The Netherlands
Next to these poles the beaches in Domburg are, in my (very biased) opinion the most beautiful beaches in The Netherlands. The beaches seem endless, there’s hardly anyone there (if you go far enough) and the water is refreshingly cold. If you’re going with little kiddies they will have the time of their lives as you can find some beautiful little seashells on the shores. I spent many hours of my childhood collecting shells together with my cousin, and we were always so happy when we found a ‘zeeboontje’ (sea bean).
If you love going for long walks or endless bike rides then Domburg is also the place to be. You can either cycle through the dunes to one of the neighboring villages and stop for a cup of coffee before you cycle back, or you can walk on the beach to one of the same neighboring villages. If you decide to go left (when facing the beach) don’t be surprised if you all of the sudden come across a lot of naked butts because there are also a few nude beaches in the area 😉
My favorite spots in Domburg
If I have convinced you to pay a visit to Domburg then you also shouldn’t miss out on the following spots:
– Go for a short walk uphill on the Hoge Hill (High Hill) from where you’ll have an amazing panoramic view over the whole area. This place is also a must-go spot for the sunset lovers amongst us.
– Have dinner at El Fuego, where you can order some of the most finger licking Mexican dishes in the area.
– Grab a cup of coffee and a yummie sandwich at the Bier en Melksalon (beer and milk saloon)
– Finish your day with a mouthwatering scoop of ice cream at De IJsvogel (the ice bird).
Have fun in Domburg! 🙂
