If you’re driving from Cairns to Port Douglas all you have to do is follow the palm trees. Literally. There are palm trees signs along the road that’ll take you all the way from Cairns up to beautiful Port Douglas.
Port Douglas itself is a true gem, but there are a few other places along the way that are well worth paying (at least a) short visit to. I listed some of Tropical North Queensland‘s most beautiful places below.
Clifton Beach
A 30 minute drive upwards from Cairns brings you to Clifton Beach. You’ll stumble upon an endless beach with hundreds of palm trees swaying in the wind. Go for a walk along the beach, or try to spot the palm tree I took the picture below on (even though I heard it is very hard to find). Be careful with swimming as jellyfish might be luring around 😉
Palm Cove
The name itself already reveals it, but Palm Cove equals palm tree heaven. It is a lot busier than Clifton Beach, and there are many cafes, hotels and resorts along the shoreline.
We stopped in Palm Cove for lunch at Chill Cafe Palm Cove. An ice coffee, good food and great beachfront views make up the perfect ingredient for that ultimate holiday feeling.
If you stroll a little bit further down (right when facing the water) you’ll arrive at a pond. Thread carefully because there might be some crocodiles around! 😉
Port Douglas
It is safe to say I fell head over heels in love with Port Douglas. Before coming to this Tropical North Queensland piece of paradise I never expected it to be such a beautiful and relaxed little town.
Just like in all other places in Tropical North QLD you’re surrounded by Palm Trees everywhere you look in Port Douglas. From cute boutiques to cozy cafes – you’ll find it here.
Tip: go to the amazing sunset point I indicated on the map below. Bring some food to throw on the barbie (bbq), pop a bottle of wine open and enjoy!
Continue the palm tree adventure
If you can’t get enough of the palms, you can even continue the palm tree adventure all the way up to Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef, making this a very unique place.
Enjoy traveling from Cairns to Port Douglas! 🙂
