Cruising the Danube in Budapest

The Budapest Parliament Building from the Danube

One of Budapest’s greatest and most well-known landmarks is without a doubt the river The Danube. When you visit this awesome Eastern European Capital, make sure you include some rollin’ on this river.

Many operators, many options

There are several companies in Budapest who happily let you float around the Danube on their boat. Some of their offers include drinks and some include dinner. And others offer a boat tour by night and some include all of the options just mentioned.

Most tours last for about an hour and sail past all the historic highlights of Budapest. Enjoy sailing past landmarks such as Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion and the Parliament. We opted for only a boat tour with Dock 8A (not sponsored). This tour offers unlimited hop ons/hop offs, which meant we could take the tour by day and by night. And it was only 11 Euro!

Sightseeing and relaxing in one

I love discovering a city by myself, but I secretly also love cheesy touristic tours. Why? Because you can just sit back and relax while the tour takes you to the most beautiful places. All while resting your feet.

Budapest’s prettiest building, the Parliament, looked even prettier when seen from the Danube. And seeing Budapest’s famous bridges up close whilst sailing underneath them is also a great experience in itself.

Isn’t this building just a stunner?

If you take the tour with Dock 8A you also get the option to get off at Margaret Island, a small island located between Buda and Pest. Wander around and enjoy the pretty parks. Did you know Margaret Island is home to the annual Sziget Festival?

A city of lights

You haven’t been to Budapest if you haven’t seen the city by night. Buda Castle, The Fisherman’s Bastion, The Parliament, the bridges and other major landmarks are beautifully illuminated. Magical views guaranteed.

Magical lights

If you’re traveling in Budapest and sailing on the Danube early spring or late fall make sure you bring a warm coat and a scarf as it can get quite windy on the boat. But no matter how cold, the views will keep you warm 🙂

Once you get off the boat and you’re freezing you can either make your way back to your hotel or warm up with a hot drink at one of Budapest’s many ruin pubs. Whatever you’re looking for, this city has truly it all.
