When in Brussels, you eat! 4x Belgian Food you have to try

Brussels is not only famous for being the capital of Belgium or Manneken Pis, it also the perfect place to eat typical Belgian food. Brussels has about 1.2 million inhabitants, and the main language spoken is French.

Before going to Brussels I didn’t expect much from this city. My friend and I were planning a weekend away and because Bruges, our first choice, was so expensive accommodation-wise, we opted for Brussels.

And I’m so glad we did! This city has definitely pleasantly surprised me in multiple ways. There were many great bars, a beautiful historic old city center and SO many delicious treats to be eaten!

In this article I’ll tell you all about the Belgian food and drinks you HAVE TO try when you’re in Brussels. Unless you’re on a diet. Then you might want to stop reading now 😉

Belgian food you must try when in Brussels: waffles!
Belgian food you must try when in Brussels: waffles!

1. Waffles.

Waffles. Oh how I love waffles. Even though I’ve had my fair share of waffles when I still lived in The Netherlands, these delicious, mouthwatering bad boys are originally from Belgium

They’re the perfect treat to have with a cup of tea or coffee, or just as a snack when visiting one of Belgium’s beautiful cities. These days you can eat waffles with all sorts of toppings: chocolate, whipped cream, sprinkles, oreo, cookies, strawberries, banana or whatever you can think of.

Tip: if you don’t have a huge appetite share one with your travel partner as waffles are very, very filling.

2. Chocolate

I never met a person who doesn’t like chocolate. Oh wait, that’s not true. I do know someone who doesn’t like chocolate. But I don’t consider them human. Because, how can you not LOVE chocolate?

Well, the Belgians understand this. And their chocolate is super famous for a reason. In Brussels you’ll find many Manneken Pis (one of their main attractions, a statue of a little boy peeing) inspired chocolates, as well as the most delicious ‘bon bons’. You haven’t been in Belgium if you haven’t tried their chocolate!

You might have seen this one coming: beer!

3. Beer

Did you know that the only alcoholic drinks I really enjoy are beer and wine? Yup, I hate cocktails or strong liquors, but you make me very happy with an ice cold beer or a good glass of wine.

And beer-wise, the Belgians got your back. In Brussels’ city center you’ll find countless cute terraces where you can sit down, relax and enjoy a good glass of beer. That is, after you’ve been able to decide which one you’re going to try. Some beer menu’s have over 50 different types of beer on them!

Can’t decide? Then try a ‘proeverij’ (tasting) where you’ll be presented with various glasses of different types of beer. But be careful: it happened to me several times after drinking just a few Belgian beers that I got smashed! The alcohol percentage is often quite high in these beers, so drink responsibly 🙂

4. Friet (fries)

Yeah, okay, I can hear you think. “Fries? We have fries in our country.” True. But the Belgians just do it best. Fact. Whether it is the cute pointy bags they serve them in or the deliciously greasy tasty mayonaise they serve them with, I never had better fries than Belgian fries. If you feel like spicing things up a little, try a ‘Friet Speciaal’, fries with mayonaise, ketchup and onions. Yum!

I don’t know about you, but after writing this blog I’m feeling very, very hungry! So if you’ll excuse me, I’ll now go try and find some Belgian food Fries, chocolate and waffles, accompanied by a glass of Belgian beer to remind me of the good times in Brussels 😉
