If you’re looking for a guide to the suburb Kangaroo Point in Brisbane then search no more. For four months I was one of the fortunate people who got to call Kangaroo Point their home in Australia.
Kangaroo Point is located very close to the CBD (central business district). Even though Kangaroo Point is quite a small suburb it’s definitely not a place where you’ll get bored easily. I’ll tell you all about on where to go, what to see and where to stay.
How to get there
Kangaroo Point is located next to the Brisbane River. There are a few ways to get here:
– By ferry: from Brisbane’s CBD (Eagle Street Pier) you can take the free ferry to Thornton Street.
– By bus: from Brisbane’s CBD (Queen Street station) you can hop on bus 100, 110, 115, 215 and 220 which will take you too Woolloongabba, right next to Kangaroo Point.
What’s in a name? Kangaroo Point Park
Even though you’re not very likely to spot any kangaroos in Brisbane, Kangaroo Point Park is just as entertaining as watching a few of these cute Aussie animals jump around.
Walk along the cliffs and enjoy the best view of Brisbane’s CBD. Or head down to Kangaroo Point Park to engage in some more adrenaline rushing activities: watersport lovers and rock climebers are at the right spot in Kangaroo Point Park. But also cyclists, joggers and yogis often make good use of this green and serene city park.
Kangaroo Point is also well-known for it’s epic sunsets. Head over to the cliffs and watch the sun set behind the high rises of the CBD. I’ve been treated to some of my most stunning sunsets in Australia here.
Aussies make the best coffee!
Australians know how to make a mean cup of Flat White, Cappuccino or any kind of coffee you can think of. Kangaroo Point is home to a couple of cozy cafes and these are my favorites:
– Beartown Coffee House
Located on Main Street this coffee bar is super easy to find and has a lovely terrace where you can watch the world go by. I often go here to enjoy a large Latte and to work on my blog, in fact: I’m sitting there as I’m writing this right now! The staff is super friendly and the coffee is delicious.
– 33 Brisbane
If you’re looking for a slightly quieter coffee bar then 33 Brisbane is the place for you. It is located very close to Bear Town, but in a small side street.
-Bar Spritz
Probably the number one place to go for a coffee AND a great view. At Bar Spritz you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee, cake or lunch whilst gazing at the spectacular skyline of Brisbane’s CBD. Next to the cafe you’ll find some stairs that lead you down to Kangaroo Point Park. Always be alert whilst sipping on your coffee though, cause I once saw a huuuuge python here. Gotta love Straya! 😉
Where to stay in Kangaroo Point
Now I might be a bit (read: very) prejudiced when it comes to recommending good accommodation in Kangaroo Point… I actually worked at the hostel I am about to recommend 🙂
Breeze Lodge is a brand new, modern hostel in the heart of Kangaroo Point, and within meters from the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. If you’re a die-hard backpacker this hostel might be a bit too fancy for you, but if you’re a flashpacker like me you will absolutely love it here.
The dorms are very spacious and most of them have their own bathroom. If you feel like chilling then are two lounge areas where you can watch Netflix. For the Master Chef’s amongst us you can fully let yourself go in the well equipped kitchen. And for the sun seekers (like me) there’s a beautiful rooftop with lounge chairs.
For bookings please click here. If you end up staying at Breeze Lodge then please tell Brigitta and Paola I’m saying hi 🙂
Once you’ve explored Kangaroo Point I’d recommend going to South Bank next. South Bank is only 15 min by foot from Kangaroo Point, and the way there takes you along the Brisbane River.
