If you’re thinking about going on a skydive in Australia then I have two words for you: DO IT!
I went on a tandem skydive in Mission Beach and I still can’t believe I did it. The thrill, the adrenaline and the entire experience are something I’ll keep on talking about for many years to come. In this article I’ll tell you all about my skydiving experience in Mission Beach.
How the day starts…
Your day starts at the office of Skydive Australia. You register, sign in and step on a scale to get weighed. Don’t worry ladies – you don’t have to look if you don’t want to 😉
Because no one can predict the weather and the wind has to be right to guarantee a safe landing it can happen that you’re going to have to wait for a little while before embarking on your skydive. The friendly team at Skydive Australia will give you an estimate of how long it’ll take until you’re ready for take off. In the meantime you can grab a cup of coffee in one of the surrounding cafes.
Gear up, meet up, check up!
After gearing up you get to meet your skydive instructor who you’ll be safely attached to your when you eventually jump out of that plane (aaahhh!) He also records the entire experience on his GoPro, so after a little introduction video and double checking all your gear you’re ready to hop on the van and drive to the plane.
The moment is almost there…
Once you arrive at the airplane it all goes pretty fast. You take a quick group picture, jump on the plane and before you know it you’re up in the air. The higher you get the more spectacular the views become, and for a split second you forget you’re about to jump…
Those who don’t jump will never fly
When the plane reaches 15,000ft (!!!) the moment is finally there. No time to change your mind anymore – let’s do this!
The scariest/craziest thing for me personally was seeing other people jump out of the plane first. It just feels sooo unnatural to see people dive out of a flying airplane!
And then it was my turn. That moment you’re actually hanging out of the plane when your instructor is still “inside” is absolutely insane. And then you fall. The wind blows through your hair, the views are absolutely stunning and you’re flying like a bird. As you’re going with a speed of 200km an hour the free fall lasts for about 60 seconds.
Gliding further down
Your instructor then opens the parachute, which is when adrenaline makes place for peace. Looking down on mother earth you see stunning beaches and the Great Barrier Reef. Floating down with your parachute open takes about 5-7 minutes, giving you plenty of time to enjoy these epic views and even to fly the parachute yourself for a bit!
Beach Landing every time!
One of the reasons why a skydive in Mission Beach is so special is because you land on the beach. Our landing went very smooth, and before I knew it I sat down at the beach. I felt slightly sick (I suffer from motion sickness) after the last minutes of flying, but this didn’t last long as I literally felt like the queen of the world. I just jumped out of a plane! Whaaaat!
Experiencing it all over again: photos and video!
To be honest, I’m not someone who buys photos or videos of these types of things. I always think they’re very overpriced and that I don’t need them. But when the photos and video of my skydive came in an hour later I absolutely LOVED it! I was like experiencing the whole dive again!
I also loved seeing the videos of my travel buddies, Jay and Esmee. It was kind of like reliving their skydiving experience as well 🙂 After sending the video to my friends and family reading their reactions was priceless. If you want to see my video you’re very welcome to by clicking here 🙂
Would I do it again? Definitely. Was it scary? I didn’t think so. Was it one of the craziest experiences of this year? Absolutely! For more info on Skydiving in Australia, please visit the website of Skydive Australia by clicking here.
