Koh Chang, which literally means ‘Elephant Island’ is Thailand’s second biggest island, located in the east of the country. The island thanks its name ‘Chang’ (which is also the name of Thailand’s most famous beer) to the elephant-like shape of the island. It is my first time on this island and so far I absolutely love it!
Getting there
Compared to the southern Thai islands Koh Chang is located fairly ‘close’ to Bangkok. You can go to any tourist office in BKK to book a bus and ferry to this tropical getaway for around 500 baht. We were picked up at Hualampong Train Station by a big, comfy coach which drove us to Trat in 5 hours. From Trat it was a 30 minute ferry ride to Koh Chang. Once arrived at Koh Chang there are plenty of taxis waiting for you to get you to your hostel, resort or hotel.
And then: paradise!
Koh Chang has many long, wide/white stretched beaches, all equally pretty and inviting. We were staying at VJ Koh Chang, a beautiful resort located directly at the stunning Klong Prao Beach. As soon as we arrived we took a dive in their big beachside pool to cool off, as it was a hot hot day! With a fresh banana shake in one hand and a good book in the other I knew I was at the right place to relax in complete serenity.
The rooms at VJ Koh Chang have recently been refurbished and I love what they did to the place. These rooms look so stylish but also make you feel right at home at the same time. The bathroom includes a big rain shower where you can easily wash the salt ‘n sand off your body after a day of utter relaxation.
At night the beach turns into an open air restaurant where you can watch some of Thailand’s best sunset shows whilst enjoying some of Thailand’s best dishes. The perfect combination! For more info please visit http://www.vjhotelskohchang.com/
Aye aye, captain!
The next day we were invited by VJ Koh Chang to go on a sailing trip with Koh Chang Sailing Club. Together with our captain the three of us set sail to roam the waters around the island. Katrien and I both never really sailed before, so our captain did all the hard work whilst we were enjoying the wind in our hair and some amazing views. After bathing in luxury it is time to go back to hostel life again, where we currently spend our days at the pool. After a few more days in Koh Chang we will head for Cambodia. Sad to leave Thailand, but also excited to visit Cambodia again! 🙂
