Pai is a little mountain village located in the north of Thailand. It’s a 3,5 hour drive from Chiang Mai. If you suffer from motion sickness be prepared: you will have to survive 762 curves on your way there.
Pretty Petite Pai
Pai is very small and consists only of a few streets. At these streets you’ll find some bars, restaurants and massage salons and during the day there’s not much to do. At night the streets of Pai turn into a market where you can buy deliiiiicious food, cute bags and lovely accessories. Tip for the veggies: try the mushroom avocado burger. YUM!
Happy birthday host!
The owner of our accommodation, Pai Chan, celebrated her birthday the night we arrived. She invited us to join her and her friends and family. There was a delicious buffet with small Thai dishes, children were dancing and live music was being played. We drank some beers, played some card games, and enjoyed dancing with the locals. If you’re ever going to Pai, make sure you book a bungalow at Pai Chan. The breakfast and lunch are fingerlicking good, the bungalows are so romantic and the view is just amazing.
Exploring Pai by motorbike
The surrounds of Pai are stunning! The best way to explore the beauty of Pai is by motorbike. You can rent one for only 150 Baht a day (around 4 US Dollars).
First we drove to the hotsprings located south-west of Pai. The road to these hotsprings was a challenging one: very steep climbs and very steep declines. Make sure you rent a motorbike with a lot of power, otherwise you won’t make it to the top. The hotsprings were exactly what the name says: hot! We bathed in the thermal waters until we turned wrinkly.
Withering heights
After the hotsprings we drove to the Pai Canyon. On the way we came across a pretty temple with a majestic bridge and a huge white Buddha. We shot some nice images and continued our drive to the Pai Canyon. If you’re afraid of heights you should think twice about going there, but if you’re not the view is breathtaking. We hiked a little across the canyon, took some photos and enjoyed the marvelous view. If you’re going to the canyon be careful: the abyss is very, very deep and walking the pathways isn’t always without any risk. Use your common sense and you’ll be fine.
Yesterday we traded in the north for the south of Thailand. We’re currently at Koh Phangan, and it is lovely here!
