When and where can you see whales in Sydney? From approximately the end of June until November tens of thousands of whales migrate along Australia’s East coast. You can go on a whale watching tour, but you’re also very likely to spot them on many places along Sydney’s coast.
These are the best spots to see whales in Sydney.
Hornby Lighthouse in Watsons Bay
This spot and its endless views are absolutely great for whale watching. If you look to the west you’ll see the Sydney Harbour, when you look north you see Middle Head and North Head, and when you gaze east you’ll look into the (seemingly) endless Pacific Ocean.
Not only is this a great spot for whale watching, the in 1858 Hornby Lighthouse is also a sight for sore eyes.
Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk
Anywhere on the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is a great spot to watch whales. I’ve seen a few when I was close to Gordon’s Bay, but also have witnessed them when I was just sitting on one of the rocks at Bondi Beach. Just keep always keep an eye on the ocean if you’re on this beautiful coastal walk during whale season 🙂
North Head Lookout in Manly
With stunning Sydney city views, North Head Lookout in Manly is an amazing spot to watch whales, but also for sunset or sunrise. Grab a coffee at Bella Vista Cafe and let’s see how many whales you can spot!
North Bondi Golf Course
Not only is this my favorite spot for sunset, it is also a tremendous spot to watch whales. High up on the North Bondi rocks you’ll get a spectacular view over the pacific ocean, and you’ll be very likely to spot a whale or two!
Barrenjoey Head in Palm Beach
Barrenjoey Head is Sydney’s most northern point. You can easily climb up by following a 1km trek towards Barrenjoey Lighthouse (1881) for some spectacular views.
It is a truly magical experience to spot these majestic mammals. Enjoy! 🙂
